A Mean Cleaning Machine

Cleaning my apartment is a never-ending nightmare. It’s near a thruway and I like to keep my windows open, so I’m perpetually losing in the war against dust. Plus I have an elderly, toothless dog that’s constantly leaving bits of half-eaten food behind her. And to top it all off, my living room rug is a lint trap that routinely defeats my regular non-robot vacuum.

So I was impressed (and horrified) at just how much dirt, dust, and hair the 360 Eye was able to pick up. I put it to the test over three days against my dog’s nightly feeding messes, which you can see in the photo to the right. The vacuum was able to pick up wet, mushy rice and chicken bits from rugs, hardwood, and tile with aplomb.

While smarter than their upright counterparts, robot vacuums can’t immediately detect where a mess has been made. But unlike some robots that randomly ping-pong across a room, the 360 Eye has a more methodical approach to cleaning. According to Dyson, the robot maps each room using its camera and divides it into quadrants. It then goes back and forth in a grid pattern until that entire portion of the room is clean before moving to the next. I tried picking up the robot and placing it in a different room and was impressed to find it not only recognized what had happened, but returned to its original spot to finish what had already been started. So if you’re patient, the 360 Eye will eventually find and clean your mess—so long as it’s not liquid (for that you’ll want a mopping robot like iRobot’s Braava Jet 240).

I also tested the 360 Eye in my living room and kitchen. I’ve had to rescue other robot vacuums trapped underneath my dining table before, but the 360 Eye was able to assess that it was too big to fit through the chair legs. Instead, it adapted to clean as close to the legs as possible, without attempting to get underneath. It repeated this process around my bookshelves, couch, and asymmetrical coffee table. Since it doesn’t get trapped, besides cleaning out the dustbin and filters, you rarely have to interact with the robot.

While the 360 Eye is attractive and powerful, it does have a few downsides. For starters, it’s pretty loud in a small room. If you have ideas of kicking your feet up and watching TV as it cleans, you’ll have to either use headphones or crank up the volume. Also, because the camera on top relies on light, you’ll have to schedule cleanings during the day or turn the lights on when you’ve got the robot running. The infrared cameras do help in dimly lit rooms, but I found the robot seemed to move slower and had a tendency to get stuck in the same spot when I turned all the lights off.

And while the camera is great for navigating around corners, it also means the 360 Eye doesn’t get up right against the wall when cleaning. So while my living room and kitchen were much cleaner overall, I did find a few rogue dust bunnies in tight corners and alcoves. Also, because it’s relatively tall, it wasn’t able to get under my TV stand and scraped along the bottom of my bed. I tested it at the same time as the Eufy RoboVac 11, which stands at 3 inches, and was able to reach under my bed and TV stand without a problem.

Battery life could also be better. In Max mode, you get roughly 40-45 minutes of cleaning. Quiet mode, in addition to being 35 percent quieter, gets you about 70 minutes of cleaning time. The good news is that if you start the robot from the dock, it automatically heads back and redocks itself when running low on battery. Charging takes about 2 hours, 45 minutes. That’s not abnormal for robot vacuums, but competitors like the Neato Botvac Connected can get up to 120 minutes of cleaning in before needing a recharge.

App and Setup

There are two ways you can get started with the 360 Eye. If you want to immediately vacuum straight out of the box, you can simply press the power button. But if you want any sort of customization or control, you’ll want to pair it with your phone through the Dyson Link app.

Once you’ve downloaded the app from the Apple App Store or Google Play, setup is relatively easy thanks to detailed prompts. All you have to do is watch an explainer video or follow along with the illustrated instructions, which walk you through the process of creating a Dyson account, setting up the dock, finding your robot’s password, connecting it to Wi-Fi, and getting your rooms ready for cleaning. It should be noted that the 360 Eye only works on 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, so if you have a dual-band router, make sure you connect to the right channel.

While I had zero problems setting up the robot with a Samsung Galaxy S7, I did encounter some issues connecting via my iPhone 7—despite recognizing the robot over Wi-Fi, it wouldn’t fully pair in the app itself. Connection mishaps aren’t out of the ordinary when setting up smart home devices, and in this case, I’m inclined to think it was my phone acting up as it paired successfully with a different iPhone 7. Throughout the entire process, I found Dyson’s customer support to be helpful and responsive.

The Dyson Link app is relatively simple in terms of features. It’ll send you notifications when the 360 Eye is cleaning or if something goes wrong. You can also set a cleaning routine, toggle between Quiet and Max modes, and view how long the robot has been cleaning and its remaining battery life. The Activity tab shows you a map of the areas cleaned in each session, as well as the occasional cleaning fact. But most helpful is the product guide. It includes instructions for how to clean and maintain the robot’s various parts, a troubleshooting manual, diagrams of the robot, and Dyson’s customer support information.

You can control the robot from multiple smartphones. As long as they sign in from the same Dyson account, your family or roommates can use their own mobile device to trigger cleanings.

Dyson 360 Eye Performance

This is where the 360 Eye truly shines. It’s the first robot vacuum cleaner to use the cyclone technology for which Dyson is famous. And while it uses one of Dyson’s older “digital motors” – the 360 Eye has a V2 motor vs the V8 in Dyson’s top-of-the-range cordless vac – it’s still in an entirely different league to any other robot vacuum cleaners.

My first outing proved as much. I cleaned, I thought, pretty thoroughly before the 360 Eye’s first run, but it still came back full after 45 minutes. On its second outing too. Run regularly, it shouldn’t require emptying quite so often, but it instantly impressed with both its cleaning performance and thoroughness in covering every accessible nook and cranny.

After a few days, I ran a back-to-back test against the Roomba 880 I’ve had for more than a year. The Roomba 880 went out first, cleaning a large double bedroom for around 60 minutes. Once done, I sent the Dyson out into the same room. It came back 20 minutes later with even more dust in its bin than the Roomba in a fraction of the time.

Side-by-side tests conclusively prove the difference, too. Even on multiple passes, my Roomba 880 struggles to capture what the Dyson does in a single pass.

Not only does the Dyson trounce its rival when collecting fine dust and particles, it’s better with heavier debris too – especially on hard floors. Here, the Roomba’s spinning brush fires debris all around the room, which only makes the problem larger. The Dyson just sucks it up and moves on.

The superior cleaning is largely down to the outstanding suction power of the 360 Eye, but its methodical navigation can’t be discounted. While its 45-minute run-time is relatively short, the Dyson uses it efficiently. It spends little time going over the same areas and it’s powerful enough to not need to.

I found one full charge was enough to cover a large living room, a small corridor and a decent-sized double bedroom – around 35m2 according to the Dyson Link app.

When cleaning, the Dyson will go home to charge and come back if there’s more to do; in a whole working day it should cover a decent area. I’d hesitate to make a guess at how much, though, since so much depends on the layout of your home.

As mentioned earlier, the one chink in the Dyson’s armour – aside from its height – is its approach to skirting boards and borders. Whereas a Roomba will detect a skirting board or border and hug it, the Dyson sticks to its cleaning pattern religiously. More often than not, it will get close to skirting boards – within a centimetre or so – but in my experience it won’t get right up to them.

It’s nothing the occasional whizz around with your regular vacuum won’t solve, but it’s something Dyson’s engineers could work to address. Another small consideration is the 360 Eye works best in daylight or decent artificial light. Since it relies on a camera to navigate, the Dyson is more sensitive to changes in lighting as it cleans. It has two infrared “headlights” to help combat low-light areas, but it still works best when it can see clearly.

That real 1K clean

Dyson’s robot vacuum is the best robot vacuum I’ve used, hands down. It cleaned my whole house, including medium pile carpet, area rugs, hardwood floors and hard tile (switching the docking charger to new locations lets you easily clean multiple rooms), and it handled oodles of dog hair with relative ease.

Ultimately, though the 360 Eye’s real limiting factor is the price tag, which runs $999 in the U.S. (and an even steeper $1,299 in my home country of Canada). That’s a lot of cash, and $100 more than the top of the line offering from iRobot’s Roomba lineup.

Whether it’s worth that much money to pick up a 360 Eye will depend on your commitment to achieving a clean house without being too personally involved in the process. I actually ultimately stopped using my Roomba, which cost considerably less, because it wasn’t really effective enough to deal with the trade-offs. The 360 Eye has been a much more effective cleaning companion over the past couple of weeks. It’s still definitely a premium priced option – but double the money of a Dyson stand-up vacfor half the labor sounds pretty good to me.

Самый мощный из протестированных пылесосов

Мы уже испытывали напольный пылесос Dyson. Протестировали мы и ручной аккумуляторный пылесос. У всех устройств есть одна общая особенность: приборы от компании Dyson относятся к бытовым пылесосам с самой высокой силой всасывания среди всех представленных на рынке. Dyson 360 Eye исключением не стал: образно выражаясь, там, где он проедет, даже трава расти не будет.

Конечно, вы можете и дальше иногда бороться с серьезными загрязнениями в квартире с помощью обычного пылесоса, но для повседневной уборки лучше будет использовать этого робота. На твердой поверхности из 300 граммов песка он собрал целых 296 граммов. На самом деле, фантастическое значение. Однако остальные четыре грамма — это несколько большая проблема, чем может показаться сначала.

Танк в гостиной

При этом речь идет не про единичный случай. Уже упомянутые четыре грамма, которые робот оставил лежать на полу, являются следствием второй проблемы аппарата: у него нет датчиков загрязнения. Если он проедет над каким-либо местом, то автоматически считает его очищенным, в отличие, например, от робота-пылесоса Roomba 980, который «в тяжелых случаях» повышает мощность всасывания или может заняться локальной очисткой особо загрязненного пространства.

В остальном навигация представляет собой микс из хорошего и плохого. За счет своих компактных габаритов (24 сантиметра) 360 Eye пробирается даже в самые небольшие уголки квартиры. Однако ему приходится капитулировать перед мебелью с низкими ножками: с его 12 сантиметрами высоты он не пролезает там, где конкуренты уже вовсю занимаются уборкой. Зато благодаря своим гусеничным колесам он свободно передвигается практически по любой поверхности — даже по легким коврикам, которые очень легко собираются в складки.

Dyson 360 Eye Design Features

Setting up the Dyson 360 Eye is easy. Just plug in the pleasingly discreet A4-size charging dock, drop in the already assembled robot vac and, when it’s charged, hit the button on its top to start cleaning.

Okay, there’s a little more to it than that. You’ll need to make your home robot-proof first, by which I mean “tidy”, but the instructions are excellent. Things become marginally more complicated when you setup the Dyson Link app – more on that later – but first, let’s take a closer look at the robot itself.

The Dyson 360 Eye is a neat little unit: smaller, yet taller, than rivals. It’s slightly narrower than an iPad Air and about as tall as seven DVD cases stacked on top of one another; it’s small enough to go places that most robot vacs can’t. On the flip side, it’s too tall to fit under the majority of sofas and beds – it managed to get under my bed, but sofas are out of the question.

Should you buy the Dyson 360 Eye?

But it isn’t this Dyson’s size that’s the most interesting design feature, it’s the 360-degree camera that inspires the name. It transforms this robot from a glorified dodgem to a self-driving dust-sucker of doom.

With one or two exceptions, robot vacs rely on a “bump and move” approach to get around: they bump into things, then find a way around them. Sensors detect steps and some models, such as the Roomba 880, employ acoustic sensors to detect the dirtiest areas. However, they’re essentially blind mice sporting digital whiskers and pre-programmed behaviour.

The Eye 360 isn’t blind. In fact, it sees in every direction simultaneously, which helps it to not only map out where it’s going, but also to avoid obstacles. It still bumps into things now and again, particularly items below its eye line, but the Dyson knows where it’s going in relation to where it’s been.

Even when the Dyson bumps into objects, it’s less aggressive and less likely to damage your furniture as a result. It’s more a very British nudge or polite prod than a bump: “Awfully sorry, don’t mind me.”

The Dyson fits into tight spaces easily, where the Roomba doesn’t.

Yet there’s nothing British about its approach to cleaning. It’s methodical, calculating and efficient – more D-Day landing than Brexit. It picks its starting point and slowly works its way outwards in squares, each time overlapping a little with its previous path so it doesn’t miss anything. Those wanting to keep an eye on what area it’s covered and how far it’s travelled can do so via the Dyson Link app.

The 360 Eye is impressively rugged and tenacious, too. Rather than wheels, it has two tilting tank tracks that tackle elevation changes with ease. It navigates my deep pile – and exceedingly cheap – Ikea rug with ease; my Roomba 880 often treats it like an obstacle and makes its way around it. It’s the Land Rover of robot vacs, but modern and reliable.

Anyone familiar with robot vacs will also notice the Eye 360 lacks the spinning side brushes that are common on many rivals units. These are intended to flick dirt into the path of the vac, particularly along skirting boards.

In my experience they work fine on hard floors but less so on carpet, merely flicking larger debris into the cleaning zone, while bypassing any dust ingrained into the carpet. Even the most ardent robot vac fan will admit that these brushes are little more than a practical, but inelegant, bodge.

The Eye 360 doesn’t need brushes because the cleaning brush bar runs the full width of the cleaner – the below comparison with the Roomba 880 illustrates the difference. This is especially useful when cleaning tight spaces and along borders, since there’s no danger of the vac missing a spot.

That said – and I’ll get into this in more detail on the next page – the Dyson isn’t as proficient at following skirting boards closely. Moreover, beyond closing doors and other physical barriers, there’s no way to limit where the Dyson goes.

Rivals employ magnetic strips or beacons to create no-go areas, such as avoiding a children’s play area or pet litter, which is handy. While this isn’t quite a deal-breaker as far as the Dyson is concerned, it does put a greater demand on keeping your home “robot ready” at all times.

Should I buy the Dyson 360 Eye

I love the Dyson 360 Eye. It cleans better than any robot vac out there. I can’t stress that enough, really. It’s in a different league.

But it’s impossible to consider the 360 Eye without discussing the price – £800 is a lot to spend on anything. Yet, it’s not a ridiculous price. The Roomba 980, iRobot’s top-of-the-range robot, costs about the same in the UK, while the likes of the Neato Botvac Connected and Roomba 880 cost around £200 less.

All have their pros and cons, but the Dyson 360 Eye is the only one I’d seriously consider buying. It is, without doubt, a luxury. But it delivers – and does so with minimum fuss.

iRobot Roomba 980

Данный факт позволяет считать Дайсон одним из самых мощных роботов-пылесосов.

Робот, осуществив двадцатиминутную уборку (либо сорока пятиминутную при максимуме), возвращается на базу для подзарядки, и только подзарядившись в течение двух часов, продолжает свою работу. Такие непродолжительные рабочие сессии устройства могут быть не очень удобны при очистке помещений с большой площадью, однако при использовании в небольшой квартире или доме этого времени будет вполне достаточно, чтобы обеспечить максимальную чистоту в комнатах.

Спартанское приложение с дополнением

Как и полагается роботу-пылесосу стоимостью более 100 000 рублей, Dyson 360 Eye можно управлять с помощью мобильного приложения. Здесь вы можете настроить расписание и выбрать один из двух режимов уборки. Особенно интересна статистика уборки: при каждом использовании робот создает карту своих передвижений и помимо прочего сохраняет даже данные о времени, проведенном в пути.

Таким образом, вы всегда можете проверить, где именно робот уборку сделал, а где — нет. В остальном приложение является более чем скромным. Оно не предоставит вам данных об износе комплектующих. Кроме того, отсутствуют режимы для очистки периметра комнаты или совершения дополнительного прохода. Тем не менее, руководство пользователя здесь интегрировано. И все-таки, приложение Roomba по-прежнему остается во всех смыслах «мерой вещей».

Design matters

Dyson makes a big deal about its engineering efforts, but its external industrial design is also a key ingredient in the appeal of its products. The 360 Eye is no exception, and its purples, blues and glossy grays make a bold visual statement, which is actually additive to your home decor. It looks sleek and modern, and draw attention – a stark contrast to iRobot and others, who seem to have designed their bots as broad flat pucks that try (but ultimately fail) to blend in with their surroundings and disappear.

The 360 Eye design is functional, too; the clear dust tray shows you at a glance when the bot is full and needs emptying, and the ‘eye’ resides up high, giving it the best possible view of its surroundings for mapping efforts. Placement of the cleaning brush is also a key part of the design, since it allows for a full width component, where most robot vacuums use smaller brush bars that mean the bot needs to make more passes to finish the job.

Dyson’s design choices have downsides, too; the height of the machine means that it can’t squeeze under couches or low tables to clean those hard-to-reach areas. Roomba’s devices are much shorter, but wider, allowing them to sneak under furniture much more easily. The fix is that you’ll have to move your furniture out-of-the-way once in a while, which ultimately isn’t that bad of a workaround given 360 Eye’s other advantages.
